Against the odds: The challenges for EFT in working successfully with intimate relationships between men 3 - Melbourne EFT

This session will explore the challenges of creating and maintaining secure attachment between men who have firstly, often experienced some degree of rejection from their parents in childhood and secondly, grown up in broader homophobic or, if not, heterosexist cultures which can be hostile or, at the very least, ambivalent towards their sexuality and intimate relationships. Furthermore, encouraging men to be vulnerable with and emotionally available to each other in EFT can evoke shame in them because this kind of deep connection runs counter to the dominant masculinity norms (especially in western countries such as Australia) that strongly privilege competition over intimacy between men. The task for EFT practitioners involves helping these men to achieve secure attachment by radically unlearning such gender conditioning, healing past trauma associated with non-acceptance of their sexuality and taking emotional risks with themselves and each other. This is no simple project: it requires the practitioner to be able to integrate this knowledge and awareness into their practice, to provide a consistently safe and affirming therapeutic space, and to patiently encourage the growth of trust and emotional intimacy so that a strong, secure and lasting bond can be forged.

MCEFT warmly welcomes one of our own members to present on this important topic.

Dr Kieran O’Loughlin is in private practice working almost exclusively with men who are in intimate relationships together. In recent years he has also been the manager and senior clinician of the counselling program at Thorne Harbour Health (previously the Victorian AIDS Council), and then senior lecturer in counselling and psychotherapy at the Australian College of Applied Psychology in Melbourne. Kieran believes passionately in supporting men to be able to strengthen and deepen their intimate attachments with each other. He is committed to using and adapting EFT for meeting this challenge. His therapeutic work is supported by forty years of activism and advocacy for the recognition and affirmation of sexual and gender diverse people, and especially their intimate relationships.
