Fighting for Connection: EFT and Intimate Partner Violence
Event Date:
August 22, 2024
Event Time:
3:00 pm
Event Location:
MCEFT is excited to offer this live online training with Belgium EFT Trainer Jef Slootmaeckers.
Jef will offer a theoretical, attachment-focused roadmap for understanding intimate partner violence.
When intimate partner violence is in the experience of couples entering therapy, therapists may be anxious. Whilst the couple may hope for help to end the violence, remain together safely, and create secure bonds, the therapist may feel ill-equipped to offer support.
Therapists face challenges ranging from a lack of awareness of the violence to an ethical obligation to refuse treatment unless the violence is separately treated. However, there are times when violence may be the subject of the therapeutic process.
Based on professional experience and new scientific research on intimate partner violence, Jef Slootmaeckers aims to enhance our understanding of this complex topic. While violence is often perceived as a contraindication for couple’s therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy, the workshop will offer ways to use EFT to help couples work toward a safer and more meaningful connection. The workshop will discuss how to assess and de-escalate couples, attachment-based meanings of violence, interventions, and more. Working with video, role-play, personal exercises, and open conversations, our goal is to provide a mini roadmap to be incorporated into the larger EFT map for therapy.
This training is open to EFT students and therapists, as well as therapists from specialised centres working with DV.
About the Presenter
Jef Slootmaeckers is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Belgium. He is a certified EFT therapist, supervisor and trainer (ICEEFT) and the director of EFT-Belgium.
Jef is specialised in working with Intimate Partner Violence and EFT. He started to work in a shelter for women and children. Later, he worked as a couples therapist for more than a decade in a specialised center with people suffering from violent escalations in their relationships. Now he has a private practice for EFT therapy and supervision. Passionate about working with trauma and aggression, Jef is always looking for ways we can use all three modalities of EFT to help wounded people, couples and families to fight for a safer connection.
Together with Lieven Migerode he wrote two books (Dutch) and several articles on EFT and Intimate Partner Violence. Together they presented the EFT and Violence/Fighting for connection-training at different places in the world. You can contact him at [email protected].
